Loomis Shijimi (tailless bushblue)

Loomis Shijimi (tailless bushblue)

A butterfly belonging to the family Lycaenidae in the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. In Japan, this butterfly inhabits evergreen broad-leaved forests in warm regions south of the Kanto region, but its habitat is limited, and it is known to be found in the prefectures of Chiba, Nara, Mie, Wakayama, Shimane, Yamaguchi, Ehime, Kochi, Fukuoka, Oita, Kumamoto, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima, as well as two islands in the Oki Islands and Yakushima. This species, found on Mt. Kasuga in Nara Prefecture, has been designated a national natural monument since 1932 (Showa 7), but is now said to be extinct. Outside of Japan, it is found in Taiwan (mountainous areas), western China, and the Himalayas.

The Japanese name is named after the American missionary H. Loomis, who first discovered the Japanese subspecies. The wingspan is about 25-29 mm. It resembles the common purple hairtail, but is smaller, and the upper part of the wings is blue, not purple. Usually, they emerge three times a year (June, August, and September), and those that emerge in autumn overwinter in their adult form (butterfly state). The larvae feed on evergreen oaks such as Quercus salicina and Quercus salicina, and there are reports that they also eat Quercus acutissima and Quercus glauca in the wild.
