French photographer. The first master of daguerreotype (silver plate photography) since its birth. His real name was Gaspard-Félix Tournachon. Born in Paris to a publisher, he became active as a journalist drawing caricatures under the pseudonym "Nadar of the Panthéon" from his youth. In 1853, he opened a photography studio in the downtown area of Paris, and gained popularity for his vivid character portrayals that were not found in conventional portrait photography. In 1860, he moved to downtown Paris, and the Nadar Studio became a bustling place, attracting artists and celebrities of his time, including Baudelaire, Dumas, Hugo, George Sand, Delacroix, Ingres, Monet, and Sarah Bernhardt. He was also the father of aerial photography using hot air balloons and photography using artificial light (arc lamps). His studio was the venue for the first Impressionist exhibition (1874).
