Yayoi period shell mounds are scattered on the eastern side of the Atsuta Plateau in Sawakami, Sotodoi-cho, Takakura-cho, and Yosamu-cho in Atsuta Ward, Nagoya City. They are also called Takakura shell mounds. They consist mainly of marine shellfish, and in addition to Yayoi pottery of various styles from the early to late periods, Hajiki and Sueki ware have also been excavated. Relics had already been collected from the site since the 1890s, but in 1908 (Meiji 41), Tokusaburo Kagiya reported the fact that stone tools were found in association with Yayoi pottery and the discovery of horse bones with notches, which attracted the attention of the academic community. Since then, small excavations have been carried out frequently, and the discovery of human bones with missing teeth and gorgeous pottery known as the Palace Style made this site famous. However, no full-scale excavation survey was ever carried out, and the area became urbanized.
