Lake Hachirogata

A lagoon at the base of the Oga Peninsula in western Akita Prefecture, surrounded by two sandbars connecting the Oga Peninsula to the lagoon. It was once the second largest lake in Japan after Lake Biwa, with an area of 223.2 ^km2 , a circumference of 78 km, and a maximum depth of 4.7 m. Freshwater and saltwater fish such as mullet, icefish, smelt, crucian carp, and goby live here, and fishing was thriving. Plans for reclamation had been made early on, but the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry entered into a technical partnership with the Netherlands, and construction began as a national project in 1957. Approximately three-quarters of the lagoon was reclaimed, with 156.70 ^km2 in the center and 15.60 ^km2 on the periphery for farmland, and the remaining southern water surface used as a balancing reservoir. The large-scale construction involved encircling the central reclaimed land with the eastern and western channels, but it was completed in 1964, and Ogata Village was established on the central reclaimed land. It is forming a model for Japanese agriculture using large-scale farming methods. After reclamation, the area is 27.7 ^km2 , the circumference is 35 km, and the maximum water depth is 12 m.

秋田県西部，男鹿半島基部にある潟湖で，男鹿半島とこれをつなぐ2つの砂州によって囲まれた海跡湖。かつては面積 223.2km²，周囲 78km，最大水深 4.7mで，琵琶湖に次ぐ日本第2の湖であった。ボラ，シラウオ，ワカサギ，フナ，ハゼなどの淡水，海水魚が生息し，漁業が盛んであった。早くから干拓の計画が立てられていたが，農林省がオランダと技術提携し，1957年国営事業として着工。潟の約4分の3を干拓し，中央部 156.70km²，周辺部 15.60km²を農地，残りの南部水面を調整池とし，東部承水路，西部承水路により中央干拓地を囲むという大規模な工事であったが，64年工事は完了し，中央干拓地に大潟村が発足した。大農法による日本農業のモデルを形成している。干拓後は面積 27.7km²，周囲 35km，最大水深 12mである。
