Yumigahama Kasuri - Yumigahama Kasuri

Japanese: 弓ヶ浜絣 - ゆみがはまがすり
Yumigahama Kasuri - Yumigahama Kasuri
Cotton kasuri fabric woven in the area around Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture. Designated as a traditional craft, it is also called Hama-kasuri. The designs are simple, with many illustrated kasuri featuring landscapes, flowers and birds, and auspicious patterns. During the Enpo era (1673-81), Komuro Shinbei brought back cotton seeds from Bitchu (present-day Tamashima, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture) and began cotton cultivation, and production began during the Horeki era (1751-64) when kasuri techniques were introduced from Bingo. Hand-spun Hakushu cotton thread, which has been improved to suit sandy soil, is hand-tied into kasuri, dyed with indigo, and woven on a takahata loom. The fabric has a soft texture and is used for bedding, zabuton cushions, and kimono fabric.
