〘 noun 〙 One of the ivory carving techniques that became popular during the Tang Dynasty in China under the influence of Western art. Arabesque patterns are carved into ivory dyed red, green, blue, etc. with hair carving. As the dye does not penetrate to the inside of the ivory, only the carved parts appear white. Among the relics in the Shosoin are the red tusk chopstick and ruler. Hanebori (chopped bamboo stick carving) .
