A strait between the eastern end of Baffin Island in Canada and Greenland. It was discovered by John Davis (c. 1550-1605) while exploring the Northwest Passage in 1585-1587. It connects to Baffin Bay in the north and the Labrador Sea and Atlantic Ocean in the south. It is wide, about 300 kilometers wide. Parts of the strait freeze over in winter, and other parts are covered with pack ice. This pack ice is carried by the Labrador Current into the North Atlantic, causing navigational obstacles. The strait is navigable from summer to late autumn. [Otake Kazuhiko] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
