Davis Strait

A strait between the eastern end of Baffin Island in Canada and Greenland. It was discovered by John Davis (c. 1550-1605) while exploring the Northwest Passage in 1585-1587. It connects to Baffin Bay in the north and the Labrador Sea and Atlantic Ocean in the south. It is wide, about 300 kilometers wide. Parts of the strait freeze over in winter, and other parts are covered with pack ice. This pack ice is carried by the Labrador Current into the North Atlantic, causing navigational obstacles. The strait is navigable from summer to late autumn.

カナダ、バフィン島東端とグリーンランドとの間にある海峡。1585～1587年に北西航路を探査中のデービスJohn Davis（1550ころ―1605）により発見された。北はバフィン湾、南はラブラドル海、大西洋につながる。幅は約300キロメートルと広い。海峡の一部は冬季凍結し、その他の部分も流氷に覆われる。この流氷はラブラドル寒流により北大西洋に運ばれ、航行の障害となる。海峡の航行は夏から晩秋にかけて可能である。
