Floating Figure - Suddenly
Also written as Futu, Butsuzu, and Puzu. A different character for Buddha used in China from the Late Han to the early Wei and Jin dynasties. It is also a transliteration of the Sanskrit Buddha, or a transliteration of the Central Asian phonetic pronunciation of Onka-futo. After Kumarajiva entered the court, it was changed to Buddha. It is also used as a transliteration of a tower (stupa) and to mean a place of training in the mountains for Buddhists.

浮屠,仏図,蒲図とも記す。中国,後漢代〜魏晋初期まで使用された仏の異字。サンスクリットのブッダの音写とも,中央アジアでの音訛(おんか)フトの音写ともいう。鳩摩羅什(らじゅう)の入朝後,改められ仏となる。また塔(ストゥーパ)の音写にも,仏教徒の山野での修行地の意味にも使われる。
