Blue centipede - Blue centipede

A terrestrial animal belonging to the family Centipedeidae, class Chilopoda, order Centipedeidae. A species endemic to Japan, found throughout Japan except Hokkaido. It is a large centipede that grows to 8 to 10 centimeters in length, with the entire back from head to tail dark green or blackish green, and yellow or orange-yellow legs. It has a pair of antennae and four ommatidia on each side of its head, and has venomous jaws. It has 21 pairs of legs. It lays eggs in the summer, and before and after this season it sometimes invades residential areas in the suburbs. Its venom is highly toxic, and a bite causes large swelling and severe pain, but is not life-threatening. Females are known to protect their eggs and larvae, and will fast for up to a month to do so. Since ancient times, the animal's body has been soaked in oil, and the liquid has been used as a medicine for wounds.

節足動物門唇脚(しんきゃく)綱オオムカデ目オオムカデ科に属する陸生動物。北海道を除く日本各地に分布する日本特産種。成長したものは体長8センチメートルから10センチメートルになる大形のムカデで、頭から尾まで背面全体が暗緑色または黒緑色をなし、歩肢は黄色か橙黄(とうこう)色。頭に1対の触角と左右4個ずつの個眼があり、毒あごをもっている。歩肢は21対。夏に産卵期があり、その前後に郊外の住宅地に侵入することがある。毒は激烈で、かまれると大きくはれ、痛みが激しいが人命にかかわることはない。雌が卵や幼虫を保護する行動は有名で、その間1か月も絶食して保護にあたる。古来、動物体を油に浸し、その液を外傷薬とする。
