Irihirose [village] - Irihirose

Japanese: 入広瀬[村] - いりひろせ

A village in Kita-Uonuma County in central-eastern Niigata Prefecture. Population 2,223 (1995). Bordering Fukushima Prefecture to the east. Located upstream of the Aburuma River, a tributary of the Uono River, the village is mostly made up of volcanic mountains such as Mt. Morikado (1,538m), Mt. Asakusa (1,585m), and Mt. Eboshi (1,350m). The center of the village is Mt. Otochi and Anazawa downstream. Inukai, a defeated warrior from Shinshu, had his castle in Anazawa at the end of the Middle Ages, and in early modern times checkpoints were placed at Rokujirigoe and Yashikigoe, key transportation routes between the Aizu and Nagaoka domains. The Oshirakawa River upstream is said to have been a village where Aizu ronin (masterless samurai) were defeated.

新潟県中東部，北魚沼郡の村。人口2223(1995)。東は福島県に接する。魚野川の支流破間（あぶるま）川の上流にあり，守門岳(1538m)，浅草岳(1585m)，烏帽子岳(1350m)など火山性の山地が村の大部分を占める。中心地は下流の大栃山，穴沢で，中世末に信州の落武者犬飼氏が穴沢に居城し，近世は会津藩と長岡藩の交通の要路六十里越，八十里越の関所が置かれた。上流の大白川は会津浪人の落人村と伝えられる。
