In the past, nitrocellulose (nitrocellulose) was dissolved in a volatile solvent along with natural resins, forming a beautiful coating that was fast drying, non-sticky, strong, and water- and oil-resistant. It was used to paint wood, metal, leather, etc. It is also called cellulose paint. This paint has a high volatile content, so it has the disadvantage of requiring multiple coats to be applied thickly. Recently, nitrocellulose is often mixed with natural resins, processed resins (such as ester gum), synthetic resins (such as alkyd resin, urea resin, melamine resin, acrylic resin), plasticizers, and softeners (such as castor oil) as resins, and a volatile solvent (such as thinner) is added to it, and no pigments are added, resulting in a transparent coating. This is called clear lacquer. Acetyl cellulose, acetyl butyl cellulose, etc. may be used instead of nitrocellulose.
