Two Russian (Soviet) writers, Il'ya Il'f (1897-1937) and Evgenii Petrov (1903-1942), worked together from the mid-1920s onwards, and wrote some of the greatest Soviet satirical novels exposing bureaucracy, including The Twelve Chairs (1928) and The Golden Calf (1931).
