…The total area of the ocean floor around the world is not increasing, but the ocean floor is expanding near the mid-ocean ridges, so it was named this way. The seeds of this idea were found in the books of Arthur Holmes (1890-1965) published in the 1940s, but it was not until the early 1960s that it was clearly formulated by Harry H. Hess, Robert S. Dietz, and others. The discovery of striped magnetic anomalies and the Vine-Matthews theory (1963), which explained their origin, were a major advancement in the theory of ocean floor spreading. …

…He imagined that the mechanism of continental drift was that lighter continents floated on denser material and moved horizontally like drifting ice. The continental drift theory was supported by Arthur Holmes of the UK, Alexanderhogie du Toit of South Africa, and S. Warreu Carey of Australia. Torahiko Terada of Japan also agreed with Wegener's continental drift theory, and thought that the particularly large number of small islands along the coast of Honshu was evidence that the Sea of Japan had opened up (announced in 1927). …
