[Classification/Distribution]
There have been various attempts to classify the Romance languages, but if we add Dalmatian (which became extinct at the end of the 19th century and was once distributed on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea) to the Romance languages in use today, the following classification is possible (the order of distribution in Europe is roughly from west to east): (1) Portuguese, (2) Spanish, (3) Catalan (also Catalan or Catalan), (4) Occitan (also Occitan), (5) Franco‐Provençal, (6) French, (7) Rhaeto‐Roman (also Rhaeto‐Roman), (8) Sardinian (also Sardinian), (9) Italian, (10) Dalmatian, and (11) Romanian. All of these "languages" contain several regional varieties (dialects), but there are languages such as (1), (2), (3), (6), (9), and (11) that have established trans-regional common languages (standard languages), and languages such as (4), (5), (7), (8), and (10) that do not have such a standard language.
