Mountain country [town] - Yamakuni

Japanese: 山国[町] - やまくに

A former town in Shimoge County, northwestern Oita Prefecture. It occupies the southeastern slope of Mt. Hiko and the upper reaches of the Yamakuni River. The lava plateau is a large mountainous area, and forestry is thriving, with rice and wheat being grown on the narrow plains along the river. It belongs to the Yaba Hita Hikosan Quasi-National Park, and its central settlement of Morizane has hot springs and is at the entrance to Oku-Yabakei. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Nakatsu City along with Hon-Yabakei Town, Yabakei Town, and Sanko Village in Shimoge County. 119.85 ^km2 . 3,500 people (2003).

大分県北西部，下毛(しもげ)郡の旧町。英彦(ひこ)山の南東斜面，山国川上流域を占める。溶岩台地の山地が広く，林業が盛んで，川沿いの狭い平地では米麦作が行われる。耶馬日田英彦山(やばひたひこさん)国定公園に属し，中心集落の守実(もりざね)には温泉があり，奥耶馬渓の入口にあたる。2005年３月下毛郡本耶馬渓町，耶馬渓町，三光村と中津市へ編入。119.85km²。3500人（2003）。
