Rough whetstone - Arato

This is the central district of Shiratakamachi, Nishiokitama County, in the southern part of Yamagata Prefecture. Formerly Arato Town. It is located on the right bank of the Mogami River in the northern part of the Nagai Basin. It is an old small castle town that flourished as a wharf for boats on the Mogami River in the early modern period and as a silk-raising town in the Meiji period. It is the terminus of the Yamagata Railway (Flower Nagai Line). National Route 287 runs through this area, and Route 348 branches off here.

山形県南部、西置賜(にしおきたま)郡白鷹町(しらたかまち)の中心地区。旧荒砥町。長井盆地北部の最上(もがみ)川右岸に位置する。古い小城下町で、近世には最上川舟運の舟着き場として、明治時代には養蚕の町として栄えた。山形鉄道（フラワー長井線）の終着地。国道287号が通じ、348号を分岐する。
