A Roman province in the western part of the Iberian Peninsula. It was the area of what is now Portugal south of the Douro River and the Extremadura region of Spain. Its capital was Emerita Augusta (now Mérida). Before the Roman period, it referred to the area between the Tagus and Douro Rivers, and its inhabitants, the Lusitanians, fiercely resisted the Roman invasions under the leadership of Viriato in the 2nd century BCE. Today, it is often used as an elegant name for Portugal. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
