An old town in Satsuma County, central Kagoshima Prefecture. It occupies a Shirasu plateau in a tributary of the Sendai River, with Imuta Pond in the southwest. It is an agricultural town producing rice, beef cattle, tea, and more. In the Middle Ages, the main settlement was the territory of the Kidoin clan, a local lord. In October 2004, Kawauchi City, Satsuma County's Hiwaki Town, Iriki Town, Togo Town, Sato Village, Kamikoshiki Village, Shimokoshiki Village, and Kashima Village were merged to form Satsumakawauchi City. 鹿児島県中部,薩摩郡の旧町。川内(せんだい)川の支流域のシラス台地を占め,南西部に藺牟田(いむた)池がある。米,肉牛,茶などを産する農業の町。主集落は中世に地頭の祁答院氏の所領であった。2004年10月川内市,薩摩郡樋脇町,入来町,東郷町,里村,上甑村,下甑村,鹿島村と合併し市制,薩摩川内市となる。82.56km2。4722人(2003)。
