This refers to household electrical machinery and equipment (home appliances) that use electricity, and includes consumer electronic devices such as televisions, radios, stereos, tape recorders, and VTRs, as well as other consumer electrical appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and air conditioners. However, it does not include lighting fixtures, light bulbs, or dry-cell batteries. With the exception of a few types such as televisions, tape recorders, and VTRs, the majority of today's major home appliances were already being produced in the world's industrialized countries before World War II. In Japan, however, production of appliances other than radios was sluggish at all. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
