An ancient Indian Buddhist scripture that was handed down in China and is a collection of 100 (actually 98) parables, or fables. The correct name is the Sutra of One Hundred Parables. The original text has not been handed down, but it was translated into Chinese by Kunabichi of the Southern Qi Dynasty at the end of the 5th century and included in the Tripitaka. It has 4 or 2 volumes. Each chapter, including The Parable of the Fool Eating Salt, begins with a parable and then concludes with a Buddhist moral story that the parable illustrates. This sutra is also known for being donated by Lu Xun to the Jinling Institute of Buddhist Scriptures in Nanjing for publication. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
