A decapod crustacean of the spiny lobster family (illustration). An important shrimp for fisheries. It is the largest of the spiny lobsters, reaching a body length of 55 cm. It is widely distributed in the western Pacific Ocean south of the Kii Peninsula and the Indian Ocean, living on shallow rocks and coral reefs. It is not often seen in Honshu, but is not uncommon south of Amami Oshima. Although it is a large species, the meat is inferior to that of spiny lobsters and has low market value, so it is only eaten locally. However, as its name suggests, it is often dried and processed into ornaments due to its colorful pattern. The carapace and thoracic legs are dark brown or purple-brown, and the thoracic legs have many yellow-white spots. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
