It is a language belonging to the Ugric group of Finno-Ugric languages of the Uralic language family, and together with Ostschak (Khanty), it forms the Ob-Ugric language. It is also called Mansi (Mansi people) based on the self-proclaimed name. It is spoken in the western part of the middle Ob River and in the tributaries such as Sosva, Lozba, and Konda, and has a population of 7,600 (1979), of which 48.5% have it as their mother tongue. It is divided into four dialects, eastern, western, southern, and northern, but the northern dialect is the most widely spoken and is the basis of the standard written language. ウラル語族のフィン・ウゴル語派中のウゴル諸語に属する言語で,オスチャーク語(ハンティ語)とともにオビ・ウゴル語を形成する。自称に基づきマンシ語Mansiともよばれる(マンシ族)。オビ川中流の西側およびソスワ,ロズバ,コンダなどの支流域にわたり話され,言語人口は7600(1979),このうち48.5%が母語としている。東,西,南,北の4方言に分かれているが,北方言が話者も多く標準文語の基礎となっている。
