Kuniga Coast

This scenic spot is on Nishinoshima Island in Dozen, Oki Islands, Shimane Prefecture. It stretches for about 13 kilometers along the north coast. It is dominated by the 258-meter-high Matengai Cliff, and features a series of strangely shaped rocks and caves, such as Akekure Iwaya and Tsutenkyo Bridge, which have been eroded by the sea due to violent waves caused by seasonal winds. The rocks are made of trachyte basalt and other rocks. It is included in the Daisen-Oki National Park area and has been designated a national place of scenic beauty and natural monument. Tourist boats run from Urago and Beppu via the Funahiki Canal, and there is also a bus service. The top of the cliff was once a pasture, but is now used for grazing cattle and horses. The Kuniga Coast Promenade has been developed.

島根県隠岐(おき)諸島島前(どうぜん)の西ノ島の景勝地。北岸約13キロメートルにわたる。高さ258メートルの摩天崖(まてんがい)を代表とし、季節風による激浪で海食された明暗(あけくれ)の岩屋、通天橋などの奇岩、洞穴が並列する。岩石は粗面岩質玄武岩などからなる。大山(だいせん)隠岐国立公園区域に含まれ、国の名勝・天然記念物に指定されている。浦郷(うらごう)、別府(べっぷ)から船引(ふなひき)運河を通り観光船が運行されバスの便もある。崖上はかつては牧畑(まきはた)であったが、現在は牛馬を放牧している。国賀海岸遊歩道が整備されている。
