Fish Age

A geological period when many fishes appeared. It refers to the Devonian period of the Paleozoic Era. Fishes, which began to appear in the late Cambrian period, underwent explosive evolution in the Devonian period, with all major taxonomic groups (classes) of fish appearing. For this reason, this period is called the Age of Fishes. Important events in the Devonian period were the rise and extinction of the jawless fishes with exoskeletons, the rise and decline of the acanthocyanids, the development and extinction of the placoderms Coccosteidae, and the development of bony fishes in the middle period. Besides Scotland, well-known fish fossils are found in Skoumenak Bay in Canada, Spitsbergen in Norway, and China.

地質時代において多くの魚類が出現した時代。古生代デボン紀をさしていう。カンブリア紀後期から現れ始めた魚類はデボン紀になると爆発的な進化を遂げ、魚類のおもな分類群（綱）がすべて出現した。それで、この時代は魚類時代とよばれる。デボン紀における重要なできごとは、外骨格をもつ無顎(むがく)類の繁栄と絶滅、棘魚(きょくぎょ)類の繁栄と衰退、板皮(ばんぴ)類のコッコステウス類（節頸(せっけい)類）の発展と絶滅、そして、中期の硬骨魚類の発展である。スコットランドのほか、カナダのスコウメナック湾、ノルウェーのスピッツベルゲン、中国などの魚類化石がよく知られている。
