An evergreen tall tree of the Lacertiliaceae family, widely distributed along tropical coastlines. In Japan, it can be found in the Ryukyu Islands and the Ogasawara Islands. In these areas, it is sometimes planted as a windbreak along the coast. It reaches a height of 20 m, and its bark is grayish-white, similar to the skin of a kiri tree. The leaves are 20-40 cm long and ovate, with shield-like stalks. In summer, it produces corymbs with small white flowers with six petals. It is monoecious, and after flowering, it produces characteristic spherical, pouch-shaped fruits. The bulging pouches, shaped like ping-pong balls, are bracts that contain a single black seed and have a hole at the top. These pouch-shaped fruits float on seawater, drifting away and germinating on sandy beaches.
