The Big Dipper is the seven stars that make up the tail of a bear in the northern constellation Ursa Major. It is so named because the seven stars look like a ladle. They are all around second magnitude and the ladle is more than 20 degrees long (1 degree is 1/360th of a circumference). They are easy to find. The North Star is located about five times the angular distance between Alpha and Beta on the extension of the line connecting Alpha and Beta. The Big Dipper is located at 12 o'clock in right ascension (longitude in equatorial coordinates) and 50-60 degrees in declination (latitude in equatorial coordinates). It reaches its highest point in the sky at noon in March and 20:00 in May and June. The stars Alpha, Beta, Delta, Epsilon, and Zeta have high declinations, so they are circumpolar stars in areas north of Honshu.
