Dependency theory

A world economic theory that has been advocated since the mid-1960s. It is a theoretical stance that regards the economic development and political and social systems of the Third World countries as the result of their inclusion in the capitalist world system, and aims to grasp the structural or class reality of the dependency relationships found there, especially the state of underdevelopment. It was first discussed in relation to the Latin American economy, and has since gained widespread support and refinement among those seeking to explain the lack of sustainable development and underdevelopment of the Third World. There are various views and conflicts regarding the specific issues, but most agree that the underdevelopment of the Third World is fundamentally inextricably linked to the development of capitalist countries within the capitalist world system, that a "unilinear development theory" such as the so-called modernization theory is incorrect, and that this dependency extends not only to relations between countries, but also to all domestic factors, albeit to varying degrees.

1960年代中頃から唱えられた世界経済理論。第三世界諸国の経済発展および政治・社会体制を，これらの諸国が資本主義世界体制のなかに包摂されてきた結果であるとし，そこに見出される従属関係，とりわけ低開発状態についての構造的あるいは階級的な実態把握を目指す理論的立場。ラテンアメリカ経済に関して最初に論じられ，その後，第三世界の持続的発展の欠如，低開発性の解明を求める人々の間で広く支持され，精緻化されるようになった。具体的な問題に関してはさまざまな見解，対立があるが，第三世界の低開発状態は，資本主義世界体制のなかでは基本的には資本主義諸国の発展と表裏一体の関係にあり，いわゆる近代化論のような「単線的な発展論」はむしろ誤りであること，およびその従属関係は国家間の関係のみならず，程度の差はあってもあらゆる国内諸要素にも及んでいるという認識においてはほぼ共通している。
