A general term for troubadours in the northern French dialect of Oïl. The themes of courtly love sung by the troubadours of southern France were introduced to northern France around 1160, and the nobility, awakened to the spirit of the court and beginning to show an interest in the psychology of love, welcomed troubadours, which led to their popularity. Starting with Chrétien de Troyes around 1170, by 1200 the style had spread from Champagne and Artois to almost all other regions, producing many poets such as Adam de la Halle and Thibault de Champagne, and this taste had spread from the nobility to the common people as well. Lutebeuf is particularly famous. As this literary taste declined around 1170, Troubert also disappeared.
