A 6th-century Korean musician from Gaya. Dates of birth and death unknown. A native of Daegaya (Goryeong). Twelve pieces are attributed to him as the composer of the gayageum (12-stringed zither). Legend has it that around the time of King Jinheung of Silla's annexation of Gaya (562), he fled to Silla and lived in Gukwon (Chungju), where he taught the zither, singing, and dancing. Later, the gayageum was adopted as part of royal court music, flourished among Silla music, gave rise to many compositions, and was even introduced to the Japanese imperial court. The place names Geumhyupo and Dangeumdae remain in Chungju. [Oi Tsuyoshi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
