Yuya Bay

An inlet in the Sea of ​​Japan embraced by the Mukatsuku Peninsula at the northwestern tip of Yamaguchi Prefecture. Opening to the west, it is a good natural harbor with an area of ​​about 45 square kilometers and a water depth of 20 to 40 meters. Small islands such as Tenagashima, Takeshima, and Enoshima are scattered within the bay, and Tawarajima at the end of the peninsula is made entirely of basalt columnar joints and has been designated a national place of scenic beauty and natural monument. The landscape of Yuya Bay is also part of the Kitanagato Coast Quasi-National Park. There are many fishing villages on the bay coast, such as Oura, where female divers fish, Kuzu, where small bottom trawl nets are used, Awano, where fishing is done, and Igami, where oysters are cultivated.

山口県北西端の向津具(むかつく)半島に抱かれた日本海の湾入。西に開口する面積約45平方キロメートルの天然の良港で、水深20～40メートル。湾内には手長(てなが)島、竹島、江ノ島の小島が散在、半島端の俵(たわら)島は全島玄武岩柱状節理からなり、国の名勝・天然記念物に指定されている。また油谷湾の景観は北長門(きたながと)海岸国定公園の一部。湾岸には海女(あま)漁業の大浦(おおら)、小型底引網の久津(くづ)、釣り漁業の粟野(あわの)、カキ養殖の伊上(いがみ)などの漁村が多い。
