A bird of the family Fringillidae (illustration) in the order Passeriformes. It is about 16 cm long, slightly larger than a sparrow. Sexes are different. The male's summer plumage is black from head to back, wings, and tail, and the throat to chest and shoulders are deep orange, with two white bands on the wings. The rump is white. The male's winter plumage and female's head are gray, while the female is paler overall. It breeds in the coniferous forests of the high latitudes of Eurasia, and spends the winter south of mid-latitudes. It migrates to Japan as a winter bird throughout the country. It mainly feeds on seeds plucked from coniferous cones.
