A bird of the family Fringillidae (illustration) in the order Passeriformes. It is about 16 cm long, slightly larger than a sparrow. Sexes are different. The male's summer plumage is black from head to back, wings, and tail, and the throat to chest and shoulders are deep orange, with two white bands on the wings. The rump is white. The male's winter plumage and female's head are gray, while the female is paler overall. It breeds in the coniferous forests of the high latitudes of Eurasia, and spends the winter south of mid-latitudes. It migrates to Japan as a winter bird throughout the country. スズメ目アトリ科の鳥(イラスト)。全長約16cm,スズメより少し大きい。雌雄異色。雄の夏羽は頭から背にかけてと翼,尾が黒く,のどから胸,肩にかけて濃いオレンジ色,翼に2条の白帯がある。腰は白い。雄の冬羽と雌は頭が灰色,雌は全体が淡い。ユーラシア大陸の高緯度地方の針葉樹林帯で繁殖し,中緯度地方以南へ渡って冬を越す。日本には全国各地に冬鳥として渡来する。餌はおもに針葉樹の球果から種子を抜き取って食べる。
