… [Kuniki Sugawara]
[music]
The old folk song ballads of the Middle Ages are a type of song in which a soloist and a chorus take turns singing narrative poems based on myths and legends. They originated as court music, but soon spread widely among the peasant classes, who sang and danced to them. An important historical source is Andreas Peter Berggreen's (1801-80) compilation of 11 volumes of Folk Songs and Poems from Home and Abroad (1842-55). The rules for folk instruments are known from the Bronze Age, but the instruments that were favored from the Middle Ages onwards were the harp, lyre, langereikh (a long-bodied zither), hurdy-gurdy and the similar Neulefeile, and flutes made from willow bark.
