A folk art form. A type of deer dance. A refined lion dance performed by eight individual deer, found in Uwajima City, Higashiuwa District, Kitauwa District, and Kita District, Ehime Prefecture. In the area where it is traditionally performed, it is called "shishimai" or "dendeko." It is said that in the early Edo period, the lord of Uwajima, Date Hidemune, introduced the deer dance from the Sendai region, and it is performed at festivals such as the Uwatsuhiko Shrine festival (October 28th and 29th), the Warei Shrine festival (July 23rd and 24th), and the Mitaki Shrine festival (Higashiuwa District) festival (April 17th). Depending on the number of dancers, it is also called the five deer dance, the six deer dance, or the four deer dance. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
