A lock. ※Saibaraku (late 7th century - 8th century) Azumaya "If there were a fastening cord and a lock , that hall door would be fastened by my latch."② A large U-shaped nail made to fasten and secure the joints of timber. ※Hyakujo Seiki Sho (1462) 2 "A shackle is a large, shackle-like object fastened with two shackles."③ A metaphor for something that keeps the relationship between two people together. Often refers to a child who keeps the bond between husband and wife together. →ko (child) is a rivet. ※Isanatori (1891)〈Koda Rohan〉76 "Before I knew it, a rivet called a child had been created."

〘名〙① 戸を締めておくための金具。かけがね。かきがね。※催馬楽（７Ｃ後‐８Ｃ）東屋「かすがひも錠(とざし)もあらばこそその殿戸我鎖さめ」② 材木の接手、仕口をつなぎ固めるために作られたコの字形の大釘。※百丈清規抄（1462）二「枷鎖とは枷と云て大なるかふきのやうなるものを二かすかいでくさりて」③ 両者の関係をつなぎとめておくもののたとえ。多く、夫婦の縁をつなぎとめる子どもをいう。→こ（子）は鎹。※いさなとり（1891）〈幸田露伴〉七六「何時の間にやら子といふ鎹(カスガヒ)の出来て」
