President of Bolivia. In office from 1952 to 1956, 1960 to 1964, and 1985 to 1989. Born in Tarija state, he studied economics at the Universidad de San Andrés in La Paz. After working as a professor and lawyer, he became a member of parliament in 1939 and helped found the National Revolutionary Movement (MNR) in 1941. In 1943 he led a coup d'état that established the Villarroel government of the party, but when that government collapsed he went into exile in Argentina in 1946. He led the MNR while in exile and was elected president in 1951. While remaining in Argentina in 1952, he led a successful coup d'état (the Bolivian Revolution) to overthrow the military government.

ボリビアの大統領。在任1952‐56,60‐64,85‐89年。タリハ州に生まれ，ラ･パスのサン･アンドレス大学で経済を学び，大学教授，弁護士を経て，39年国会議員となり，41年国民革命運動(MNR)の創設に参加した。43年にクーデタを指揮して同党のビジャロエル政権を成立させるが，同政権の崩壊とともに46年アルゼンチンに亡命する。亡命中もMNRを指導し51年の大統領選で当選。52年アルゼンチンに滞在したまま軍事政権打倒のクーデタ(ボリビア革命)を指導し成功させる。
