1907‐2001 President of Bolivia. In office from 1952 to 1956, 1960 to 1964, and 1985 to 1989. Born in Tarija state, he studied economics at the Universidad de San Andrés in La Paz. After working as a professor and lawyer, he became a member of parliament in 1939 and helped found the National Revolutionary Movement (MNR) in 1941. In 1943 he led a coup d'état that established the Villarroel government of the party, but when that government collapsed he went into exile in Argentina in 1946. He led the MNR while in exile and was elected president in 1951. While remaining in Argentina in 1952, he led a successful coup d'état (the Bolivian Revolution) to overthrow the military government.
