A general term for fish in the family Pleuronectidae, order Pleuronectiformes. They are found in areas ranging from the cold to temperate zones, and occasionally from the coasts of the tropics to the deep seas on the ocean floor, with some living in brackish lakes. Both the number of species and the abundance of resources are greater in the cold regions, making them fish of cold regions. There are approximately 100 species worldwide, of which approximately 40 are known in Japan. They range from species with a body length of around 10 cm, such as the Japanese flounder (illustration), to species such as the halibut (illustration) that can grow to over 2 m in length and weigh over 200 kg.
