1071‐1126 He was one of the medieval French nobles, and left his name as a poet. Commonly known as Guillaume d'Aquitaine, he owned vast estates, even more than the king, as Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Poitiers. However, he was not particularly skilled as a warrior or politician, and was excommunicated by the Pope many times for bad behavior, but he was a genius poet. Of his eleven surviving poems, about half are unrestrained and sometimes lascivious, but the other half sing of love for fine ladies, and he is considered the founder of the troubadours.
