He was one of the medieval French nobles, and left his name as a poet. Commonly known as Guillaume d'Aquitaine, he owned vast estates, even more than the king, as Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Poitiers. However, he was not particularly skilled as a warrior or politician, and was excommunicated by the Pope many times for bad behavior, but he was a genius poet. Of his eleven surviving poems, about half are unrestrained and sometimes lascivious, but the other half sing of love for fine ladies, and he is considered the founder of the troubadours.

フランス中世の諸侯の一人で，詩人として名を残した。通称ギヨーム･ダキテーヌGuillaume（/）d’Aquitaine。アキテーヌ公として，またポアティエ伯として，国王をしのぐ広大な所領の持主であった。しかし武人，政治家としての手腕は必ずしも芳しくなく，素行不良のかどで教皇から何度も破門処分にあうが，天才的詩人であった。現存11編の詩のうち，約半数は奔放ときに好色だが，残る半数は，すぐれた貴婦人に対する愛を歌い，トルバドゥールの始祖とされている。
