Dry cloth friction - Kampumasatsu

This is a folk remedy that aims to build up resistance to cold by rubbing the surface of the skin with a dry towel or similar. Humans are warm-blooded animals and need to maintain a constant body temperature, and for this purpose, they are equipped with various regulating mechanisms. Most of the body heat is dissipated by radiation from the surface of the skin, but when exposed to cold winds, the body naturally initiates reflex mechanisms to prevent heat loss by raising the hair, shivering, and constricting the blood vessels in the skin close to the surface of the body, and these commands are sent from the hypothalamus. Dry cloth friction aims to make these reflexes occur more quickly by directly applying physical stimulation to the skin with a towel or similar. Exposing the skin and applying dry cloth friction in cold seasons not only strengthens the reflex mechanisms, but also strengthens the psychological aspects of overcoming the cold, and is also used in the treatment of children with asthma. Similar to dry cloth friction is cold water massage, where a towel is soaked in cold water, wrung out tightly, and then rubbed against the skin, or cold water baths, where water is poured over the body after a bath. These aim to strengthen the reflex mechanism by stimulating the central nervous system from the periphery.

乾いたタオルなどで皮膚表面をよくこすることによって、寒冷などに対する強さを養おうとする民間療法の一つである。恒温動物である人間は、体温を一定に保つことが必要であり、そのために、さまざまな調節機構が備わっている。体熱の放散は、皮膚表面より放射という形で多くなされているが、とくに冷たい風に当たったときなどは、放熱を防ぐために、毛を立てたり、ふるえをおこさせたり、体表面に近い皮膚血管を収縮させたりすることで、体温の低下を自然に抑制する反射機構が働くが、これらの命令は視床下部から出されている。乾布摩擦は、タオルなどで直接物理的な刺激を皮膚に与えることにより、こうした反射がより速やかに行われるようにすることをねらったものである。寒い季節に皮膚を露出させて乾布摩擦をするということは、単に反射機構を強化するだけではなく、寒さに打ち勝ってゆくという心理面での強化をも備えており、喘息(ぜんそく)児の治療などにも利用されている。乾布摩擦と同様なものに、タオルを冷たい水にぬらして強く絞ってから皮膚をこする冷水マッサージや、風呂(ふろ)上がりに水をかぶったりする冷水浴などがある。これらは、末梢(まっしょう)から中枢に向かって刺激を与えることで、反射機構の強化をねらったものである。
