827‐886 Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 867-886. Born into a farming family in Thrace. Under the patronage of Michael III, he rose from groom to co-emperor. Later, he assassinated Michael III and ascended to the throne, founding the Macedonian dynasty. He held the Eighth Ecumenical Council in the capital, Constantinople (869), and put an end to the Photian controversy with the Pope. He compiled the Procheiron (a practical handbook for civil and public law) and its revised Epanagoge in order to put the Corpus Juris Juris into practical use. Externally, he established themes (military districts) in southern Italy to suppress Islamic forces moving north from Syracuse in Sicily.
