A Greek Church Father who worked hard to resolve the Arian problem. His Latin name was Basilius. He was one of the Cappadocian Triad. He was the older brother of Gregory of Nyssa. He is called Basil the Great and is especially revered in the Eastern Church as the father of monastic life. He was born into a wealthy and distinguished family in Caesarea, Cappadocia, and studied in his hometown, Constantinople, and Athens. During his time there, he formed a friendship with Gregory of Nazianzus, and in Athens he studied with Julian, who later became the Roman emperor and attempted to revive paganism, at the gate of the pagan philosopher Libanius (c. 314-393).

アリウス派問題の解決に尽力したギリシア教父。ラテン名はバシリウスBasilius。〈カッパドキア三星〉のひとり。ニュッサのグレゴリオスの兄。〈大バシレイオス〉と呼ばれ，東方教会では〈修道生活の父〉として特に敬意がはらわれている。カッパドキアのカエサレアの富裕な名門の家に生まれ，生地およびコンスタンティノープル，アテナイで学んだ。その間にナジアンゾスのグレゴリオスと友情を結び，アテナイでは異教の哲学者リバニオスLibanios(314‐393ころ)の門で，のちにローマ皇帝として異教の復活をはかったユリアヌスとともに学んだ。
