Menda [town] - Menda
An old town in Kuma District, occupying the central part of the Hitoyoshi Basin in the southeastern part of Kumamoto Prefecture. The main settlement is on the south bank of the Kuma River, near the confluence with the Menda River, and developed as a commercial town with the opening of the Yunomae Line in 1924 (converted into the Kuma River Railway in 1989). The surrounding areas are rural areas where rice paddy farming is the main practice, with many sawmills. In April 2003, it merged with the villages of Kamimura, Okaharamura, Suemura, and Fukada to form Asagiri Town. 10.31 km2 . 5,991 people (2000).

熊本県南東部,人吉盆地中部を占める球磨(くま)郡の旧町。主集落は球磨川の南岸,免田川との合流点付近にあり,1924年の湯前(ゆのまえ)線(1989年くま川鉄道に転換)開通により商業町として発展。周辺部は水田耕作を主とする農村。製材工場が多い。2003年4月,上村,岡原村,須恵村,深田村と合併してあさぎり町となる。10.31km2。5991人(2000)。
