A diagram that shows the flow of data or the steps for solving a problem. It is also called a flow diagram. It is used to illustrate program design and business processes. When creating complex programs or business processes, it is necessary to clarify what processes will be done and in what order. Creating a flowchart makes the flow of information visible, making it easier to organize and understand. In a flowchart, basic processes are represented by rectangles, conditional branching processes by diamonds, and other symbols that represent special processes are combined. The JIS standard stipulates which symbols should be used for which processes.

データの流れや問題解決の手順を表す図式。流れ図とも呼ばれる。プログラムの設計や、業務の流れなどを図示する場合に利用される。複雑なプログラムや業務の工程を作成するときは、どの順番でどんな処理をするのかを明確にする必要がある。フローチャートを作成することで情報の流れを視覚化し、整理・把握しやすくできる。フローチャートでは、基本となる処理を長方形、条件分岐する処理は菱形など、特別な処理を意味する記号を組み合わせて表現する。どの処理に対してどの記号を使うかはJIS規格に定められている。
