…Under this law, each state was given 30,000 acres (about 12,000 ha) of public land or public land certificates for each member of the House of Representatives, and the sale of these land was used to establish universities to teach agriculture and technology. These universities were called A and M (agricultural and mechanical) colleges or land-grant colleges, and many of them eventually grew into state universities. In 1890, the same Morrill proposed that these universities be given $25,000 in federal funds per year. …
