Kameido

Japanese:
Kameido

The area is located at the northeastern edge of Koto Ward, Tokyo, and is centered around Kameido Station on the JR Sobu Line. It was once called Kamejima (Kamejima) because it was an island shaped like a turtle, and later became connected to the mainland and was called Kamemura (Kamemura). There was also a well called Kamegai here, and the two names were mixed together to form the name of the place. During the Edo period, the area was home to the shogunate's Zeniza (copper coin mint) and was also known as Kameido Tenjin. It is still known today for the Usokae Shinto ritual in January, the Wisteria Festival in April and May, and prayers for academic success. The watch factory in the south was relocated, and on the site was built Sun Street, a large commercial facility (opened in 1997) with numerous specialty stores and mass retailers, developed mainly by watch companies. Kameido Station is also the starting point of the Tobu Kameido Line, and Meiji Dori runs north and south, making the area around the station a bustling shopping district. It is located in the so-called zero-meter zone.
