Hashiguiiwa Rocks

Japanese: 橋杭岩 - はしぐいいわ
Hashiguiiwa Rocks

A rock formation in Kushimoto Town, Higashimuro County, southern Wakayama Prefecture. It is also called Tateiwa. Stretching about 700 meters south from the coast toward Oshima Island, more than 30 large and small giant rocks line up in a row on the sea. They were formed by marine erosion of a vein of quartz trachyte that erupted into a crack in a Tertiary shale layer. There is a legend that Kukai (Kobo Daishi) abandoned construction of a bridge here. It is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. It is part of Yoshino-Kumano National Park. There is a swimming beach adjacent to it.
