A priest and Buddhist scholar of the Otani sect of Shinshu Buddhism from the Meiji to Showa periods. He was the eldest son of Enen (?-1887) of Myodatsuji Temple in Kitayasuda, Dejiro Village, Ishikawa County, Ishikawa Prefecture. He was ordained at Higashi Honganji Temple in 1891 (Meiji 24). After graduating from Otani University of the Shinshu sect (now Otani University) in 1900, he was ordered to study at the Tokyo School of Foreign Languages with the aim of becoming a diplomat, but eventually dropped out. He studied under Kiyozawa Manshi along with Sasaki Gessho and Tada Kanae (1875-1937), and became a member of the Kokodo temple that Kiyozawa opened in Hongo, Tokyo, and participated in the spiritualist movement. In 1901, he was in charge of editorial affairs for the publication of the magazine "Seimeikai." In 1910, he was questioned about Ishin (a heretical theory of Jodo Shinshu) during a lecture. In 1951 (Showa 26), he became the head of the sect. He passed away on August 27, 1954.
