An island group in the Seychelles, located about 400 km northwest of the northern tip of Madagascar, on the east coast of Africa. It consists of four islands on an atoll surrounding a lagoon. It has an area of about 155 km2. There are no permanent residents. All four islands are low and flat, with the highest point only about 30 m above sea level. It is believed that part of the former Gondwana continent is the basis of the islands. Rare plants and animals can be seen here, including large giant tortoises, and a research institute is located here. It is also used as a fishing base.
