Usually, this refers to lead(II) chromate. It occurs naturally as chromite. It is obtained as a precipitate when water-soluble chromate or dichromate is added to an aqueous solution of lead(II) acetate or lead(II) nitrate. It is a yellow crystal. Those containing small amounts of impurities are blackish or reddish. It is practically insoluble in water, but dissolves in alkali to form zincate M I 2 PbO 2. It also dissolves in acid, and turns black with hydrogen sulfide, but is stable in light and air. It is the main component of yellow lead (chrome yellow), a yellow pigment. It is also mixed with copper oxide to remove sulfur oxides from combustion gases during elemental analysis of carbon and hydrogen.
