Goyo Hashiguchi

Woodblock artist of the Meiji and Taisho periods. Born in Kagoshima. His real name was Kiyoshi. He first went by the names Kirigaku, Shimizu, and Suiho, changing his name to Goyo in 1903 (Meiji 36). In 1899 he moved to Tokyo and became a pupil of Hashimoto Gaho. He then enrolled in the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1905. In the same year he designed the cover of Natsume Soseki's "I Am a Cat," which was well received and he was subsequently involved in the design of other novels by Soseki and others. In 1915 (Taisho 4), on the recommendation of Watanabe Shozaburo, an ukiyo-e dealer who was working to preserve the traditional woodblock techniques of ukiyo-e, he produced his first woodblock print, "Bathing Woman," and began his career as a woodblock artist. Resisting the trend of the creative print movement, which urged printmakers to handle the entire process from sketch to carving and printing, he borrowed the skilled techniques of carvers and printers to revive the legacy of ukiyo-e beauties by artists such as Harunobu and Utamaro with a modern sensibility. His representative works include "Woman in Makeup" (1918), "Woman Combing Her Hair" and "Woman in a Long Undergarment" (both 1920), and he also left behind prints of landscapes and bird-and-flower paintings. He died in Tokyo at the age of 40.

明治・大正の木版画家。鹿児島に生まれる。本名清。初め霧岳、清水、翠峯と号し、1903年（明治36）から五葉と改める。1899年上京、橋本雅邦(がほう)に入門。さらに東京美術学校西洋画科に入学して1905年に卒業。同年夏目漱石(そうせき)の『吾輩(わがはい)は猫である』を装丁、好評のため以後漱石ほかの小説本の装丁にかかわる。15年（大正4）、浮世絵商で浮世絵伝統の木版技術の保存に努めていた渡辺庄三郎の勧めにより、最初の木版画『浴女』を発表、木版画家としての活躍に入る。版画家が下絵から彫刻、摺刷(しょうさつ)の全工程を手がけるべきとする創作版画運動の流行に抗し、彫師(ほりし)や摺師(すりし)の熟練した技術を借り、春信(はるのぶ)や歌麿(うたまろ)など浮世絵美人画の遺産を近代的な感覚で再興させた。代表作に『化粧の女』（1918）、『髪梳ける女』『長襦袢(じゅばん)の女』（ともに1920）があり、ほかに風景画や花鳥画の版画も残した。満40歳で東京に没。
