〘noun〙① To return something to its original shape, nature, or state. To return to its basic form. Also, to return something that has been obtained as a result to its cause. ※Michido (1914) by Takamura Kotaro, Sensou: "All harmony has been broken. The molecules have been reduced." ※Seiza (1922) by Arishima Takeo, "Compared to the way you boast with an arrogant attitude, without reducing it to the person that is you." ② When a molecule, atom, or ion takes in an electron, decreasing its positive valence or increasing its negative valence. ⇔Oxidation. [Seimi Kaisou (1837-47)] ③ In economics, converting the average earnings for a certain period into capital based on the interest rate for that period. Reduction method. ④ To explain a theory as being derived from a simpler theory. For example, to explain a more complex situation as being derived from a simpler situation.
